272407_full.jpg Today Ubisoft, one of the world’s largest video game publishers, announced that Silent Hunter: Wolves of the Pacific U-Boat Missions, an add-on to the critically acclaimed Silent Hunter: Wolves of the Pacific submarine simulation, will be available for PC in spring 2008. Developed by Ubisoft Romania, the add-on will allow players to prowl the Indian Ocean as the captain of a German submarine.Silent Hunter: Wolves of the Pacific U-Boat Missions extends the gameplay experience of Silent Hunter: Wolves of the Pacific by focusing on the historically accurate but largely unknown German U-boat campaign in the Indian Ocean during World War II. U-Boat Missions offers players a variety of new features and content including an entirely fresh and innovative strategic element, new playable submarines, an improved navigation map, improved upgrade system, and more. Silent Hunter: Wolves of the Pacific U-Boat Missions is an essential addition for any simulation fan.

Key Features:

**German Campaign in the Indian Ocean: The new campaign spans from July 1943 until end of war, in May 1945. Players will operate from such far-off Japanese naval bases as Penang, Singapore, Jakarta and Surabaya.

**Strategic Warfare: As the player rises in rank and experience he gains access to new strategic resources, such as recon aircraft that track down enemy shipping and even battle groups that can help wipe out superior enemy forces.

**New Playable Submarines: Take to the seas in the long-range Type IX-D2 U-boat and the revolutionary Walther propulsion type XVIII U-boat. Learn the strengths and weaknesses of these boats and how you can overcome even elite, late-war allied destroyers with high-speed hit-and-run attacks.

**Heroes: Based on actual historical figures, these new crewmembers add a number of special abilities that can change the fate of battle and save the ship when the time is right, as well as adding historical color to the game.

Run Crysis In Windows XP With High End Visuals

Tag: CrysisNightCrawler @ 1:26 pm

crysis.gifThe Crysis demo has proven to be a huge taskmaster on even the highest end PC hardware but this post on the fan site Crysis Online has a tip that will make Windows XP users of the Crytek first person shooter happy:

If you tweak the configuration files in \CVarGroups\ by copying and pasting the “very high” settings (1st paragraph) IN PLACE of the “high” settings (last paragraph) the game will load the highest possible settings even though the drop-down menus display “high.”

The difference between “high” settings and the tweaked settings is immense: shadows are deeper, more realistic; the leaves have better reflective properties, better textures; the colours are better; and the level of detail is simply stunning.

With these settings I’m running the game between 15-25 FPS at 1440×900 and (wait for it) 8x AA, and it looks PERFECT. Best of all, this is in XP

Call of Duty 4 Criticized For 5-6 hour Campaign Mode

Tag: Call of Duty 4NightCrawler @ 11:52 am

cod4shot.jpgAn early review of Call of Duty 4 says the single player campaign takes only five to six hours to complete on normal difficulty.

According to the Official Xbox Magazine (Dec ‘07 issue), Call of Duty 4 comes up short in terms of rewarding single players with a lasting campaign mode. The game reportedly talks only “five to six” hours to complete on the default difficulty setting.

While there is no standard in how long a single player game should be, Call of Duty 4 also provides near-endless hours of entertainment via a robust online multiplayer component.

Other high-profile games have recently been criticized for their short single player modes, namely Heavenly Sword on PS3 and Halo 3 for Xbox 360 which gives rise to the question: How long should the average single player campaign last given the high amount of polish many next-generation games display?
