More Battlefield 3 Battlelog Details Emerge

Category: Battlefield 3NightCrawler @ 1:46 PM

Get the lowdown from Fredrick Loving

EA and DICE have released more details on Battlefield 3’s Battlelog.

They come fresh from the fingers of Fredrick Loving (kudos on the name), Battlelog producer at DICE.

The ‘Battlefeed’ will be your main window into Battlelog, showing current events around your network in real-time, explains the Battlelog rundown.

It will give you a live snapshot of what those in your network are doing in the world of Battlefield.

“The feed will encourage people to play even more,” adds Loving. “They will see their friends ranking up, receiving awards they don’t have yet, or getting the new cool guns they have been missing. It will increase the competitive edge. Everything you do on the battlefield is shared amongst your friends.”

You’ll be able to see when a friend unlocks a particularly difficult achievement and offer them kudos, the description continues on the Battlefield Blog.

“Another pal just joined a multiplayer Rush match in Operation Métro and is looking for some help – now you know, so you can quickly jump in and give them a hand.”

“If someone just nabbed your dog tag in multiplayer, they can shoot you a quick note to say thanks (or, more likely, use those newly anointed bragging rights). It’s all here in the real-time feed for you to share, comment and like.”

A fully-featured soldier progression section is also included, bringing full stats tracking for every shot fired and every action performed in your Battlefield career.

“Battlefield players love their statistics,” says Loving. “Now we will give them everything that they want while adding a social layer on top of that.”

Battlefield 3 Out of Steam

Category: Battlefield 3NightCrawler @ 1:44 PM

Retailer suggests that EA’s shooter might not appear on Steam.

EA’s hotly-anticipated Battlefield 3 may not come to Steam when it’s released later in the year, US retail giant GameStop has suggested.

Financial research firm Baird stated as much following a meeting with GameStop’s management team, saying that the “upcoming EA title Battlefield 3 will be sold as a download through GameStop, but not through Steam.”

It was confirmed to Develop that this news comes directly from company executives. The DICE shooter will come to other digital download services, however.

The Baird report continues: “Given Steam’s dominance – and insistence on users downloading a Steam client application – publishers are likely to be receptive to a competitive alternative,”

EA recently launched Origin, a digital download service set to rival Valve’s. And last month saw the EA-published Crysis 2 removed from Steam after a DLC exclusivity deal was signed with another service. EA claimed no responsibility for the removal or the deal.

It may well be missing out on Steam, but we’re still looking forward to Battlefield 3’s launch on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC on October 25 in the US, and three days later in Europe.

Call of Duty Elite PC Beta Starting in Fall

Category: Call of Duty EliteNightCrawler @ 1:42 PM

Though beta testing for Activision’s shooty subscription service Call of Duty Elite began last week on Xbox 360 and is spreading to PlayStation 3 later this summer, PC gamers will have to wait until fall to give it a whirl. The news comes via Activision’s official blogger, Dan Amrich.

Still, it’s good to hear that there will be a PC beta at all. Though Activision initially stated plans for the beta to hit PC too, it later updated its FAQ to state, “Currently, we do not plan to launch a version of the beta for the PC version of Call of Duty: Black Ops.” Someone needs to update that again, then.

For a monthly subscription fee, Call of Duty Elite will offer features including performance-tracking heat maps of all your games, custom leaderboards, video uploading, social features, and statistics, statistics, statistics galore.

CoD Duty Elite will launch alongside Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on November 8. The beta uses Call of Duty: Black Ops. Two million or so Call of Duty players signed up for the CoD Elite beta and invites are going out slowly at first, “more or less in the order” of when players signed up.

Battlefield 3 Book Coming from Andy McNab

Online stores listing mystery Battlefield book for release alongside the game

Retailers Amazon and Barnes & Noble are taking pre-orders for a Battlefield 3 book set for release on October 25, the same day EA’s FPS hits stores.

As spotted by Battlefield 3 Blog, the 400-page mystery offering has been penned by the game’s executive producer, Patrick Bach, and Andy McNab, the pseudonym of an English novelist and former SAS operative and soldier.

Has the single player campaign been adapted for a novel? Is it a ‘making of’ book?

It’s been public knowledge for some time that Andy McNab been helping DICE out with elements of Battlefield 3’s production. Bach told Edge last month: “Andy McNab has been working with us for quite some time now, talking to our writers about authenticity when it comes to mission structures.

“And he’s been involved in motion capture; since he’s been involved in, for instance, the movie Heat, consulting on gun handling matters, he knows what it takes to make his experience fit onto an entertainment product.”

DICE has talked up the technical prowess of its Frostbite 2 engine again this week, teasing the chaotic prospect of putting terrain-deforming earthquakes in Battlefield 3’s multiplayer modes.

Battlefield 3: ‘We Can Do Earthquakes in Multiplayer’

Category: Battlefield 3NightCrawler @ 1:33 PM

DICE “looking into” ambient destruction for online modes

Battlefield 3 developer DICE has again talked up the technical prowess of its Frostbite 2 engine, and teased the chaotic prospect of putting terrain-deforming earthquakes into its new multiplayer mode.

Speaking to PSM3 magazine, lead multiplayer designer Lars Gustavsson confirmed the quakes seen in impressive single-player demos are “technically possible” in Battlefield 3 multiplayer games.

“We’re still looking into ambient destruction in multi-player; it’s still too early to say really,” he told the mag.

“It’s technically possible to have earthquakes in multi-player using Frostbite 2. We feel like kids walking into sweet shops with Frostbite – it has so many features we never knew we needed, and we’re still figuring out how best to use them.

“It’s just the start for this engine. So far, the only limit to the things we can do with it are our own creative restraints.”

The Swedish developer’s made no secret it wants to stick to the series fundamentals for Battlefield 3, saying it has “no urge to innovate for the sake of innovation.”

Some fans might be concerned by the decision to combine Medic and Assault classes then, but Gustavsson argues it’s the right move:

“Our main thinking with the medic class is that we want more people in the game, playing, than sat in the spawn menu,” he said. “So, the more chances we give team mates to help with things like revives, the better.

“We constantly evaluate where people are on the battlefield – and as we saw it in Bad Company 2, Medics were rarely equipped to be on the real frontline. It was the Assault class that people took to the front, so it seemed natural to combine the two.”

Category: Modern Warfare 3NightCrawler @ 1:30 PM

Retailer GAME says shooter’s “tracking significantly ahead” of Call of Duty: Black Ops

All the signs are pointing towards Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 being the biggest release in the series yet.

Retailer GAME has told MCV it expects the shooter to break all UK pre-order records and become the firm’s bestselling title ever.

“Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 pre-orders are already tracking significantly ahead of Call of Duty: Black Ops at the same time last year,” GAME Group MD Tom Devine said.

“We know that the Call of Duty brand and franchise has the most amazing fan-base and we’ve got some great surprises lined up for those who pre-order with us. We’re looking forward to an incredible launch on November 8th.”

Last month, leading US games retailer GameStop also said Modern Warfare 3 pre-orders were tracking at a ‘record-setting pace’.

CoD: Black Ops was recently named the UK’s top selling game of all time.

Black Ops: Annihilation PC Release Date Confirmed

Category: Call of Duty Black OpsNightCrawler @ 12:36 PM

Treyarch unveils Annihilation map pack release date and it’s soon

PS3 and PC fans of Black Ops have had to wait almost a month for their dose of the Annihilation map pack, but Treyarch has just confirmed that the expansion will release on July 28 for both platforms.

Of course, Xbox Live users have been tucking in for well over a month now to the Annihilation map pack, which features four new maps including Silo, Hangar 18, Drive-In and Hazard (see descriptions below), with the splendid zombie-survival fest Shangri La rounding out the offering.

No word on pricing just yet, but as always looks like there will also be the traditional double XP weekend to celebrate the new Black Ops goodness. Looking forward to this PS3 fans? Let us know in the comments below.

Here’s the word on each map from Treyarch’s online director, Dan Bunting:

Drive-InThis one-time American movie paradise once showed war movies; now it’s the location for one. The holes in the screen have been filled with snipers. The popcorn is stale, but they’re still serving up hot lead in the concession stand. Drive-In is a small map, very fast paced. It’s similar to Nuketown in that it’s a fast, close-quarters map.

HazardAh, the Cuban good life! This swanky golf course features lush greens, oceanic driving ranges, and long-range sniping opportunities straight down its deadly fairway. Never mind getting a hole in one – try not to get lots of holes in you. Those skilled with assault rifles and sniper rifles will enjoy this one.

SiloIf you’ve ever said to yourself, “This is a great map, but what it really needs are missiles launching right next to my ear, so every time I line up to snipe someone, I pee myself instead” – and really, who hasn’t? – this is the map for you. Muddy sloped terrain, a smattering of construction equipment, and a few carefully placed sniper towers make this military outpost a tactical challenge regardless of game type.

Hangar 18This one’s a tribute to the Groom Lake military base where the government developed the SR-71 Blackbird – or, depending on the conspiracy theories you choose to believe, where they stored a recovered alien spacecraft. Either way, you’ll be in an out of buildings frequently here, not to mention using a multi-million-dollar piece of reconnaissance aircraft for cover. But that’s not the only secret project it’s hiding. Hangar 18 has a couple of fun Easter eggs.

Shangri-LaIt’s one of the more creative and clever map designs we’ve got so far,The diehard fans are really going to appreciate the story hooks in this one as well.”

MW3 has COD 4 Mentality, Clamps Down on Campers

Category: Modern Warfare 3NightCrawler @ 2:33 PM

Infinity Ward gives more details on Modern Warfare 3 multiplayer

Infinity Ward has given more details on Modern Warfare 3’s multiplayer, how it’s discouraging campers and creating a more ‘COD 4’ mentality for its latest FPS outing.

The studio is crafting multiplayer maps that have no more than five hotspots where campers are likely to hang out and wait for their prey, the studio says.

“It simplifies it so that the less skilled player has less to think about,” creative strategist at Infinity Ward Robert Bowling, told Kotaku.

“What happens when you have more is that the professional guys are using that spot that is either difficult to get to… There’s fewer places to hide, which discourages the camper mentality that seemed to emerge in the map design of Modern Warfare 2.”

Modern Warfare 3 is also edging closer to the original Modern Warfare than its direct predecessor in terms of general feel and philosophy.

“Modern Warfare style is, for me, all about the high-speed, fast-paced-and I’m talking in terms of smooth controls and 60-frames-per-second framerate-infantry-focused combat,” Bowling continued. “Tt’s all focused on that gun-on-gun gameplay, especially in Modern Warfare 3.

“I feel like it’s something we nailed with Call of Duty 4. We moved away from it a little bit with MW2, relying heavily on air support, killstreaks, perks and stuff like that. Modern Warfare 3, very much [is] building up from that Call of Duty 4 mentality of gun-on-gun, fast-paced infantry gameplay.”

Bowling told CVG about the crack team of QA testers Infinity Ward has flown in specially to put the Modern Warfare 3 multiplayer through its paces. Have a read if you haven’t already.

Call of Duty Elite Beta Invites Released Today

Category: Call of Duty EliteNightCrawler @ 1:49 PM

Have you been selected for the first wave of testers?

The Call of Duty Elite beta begins tomorrow and the first wave of people selected to be testers will be informed today.

Call of Duty: Elite is of course the multiplayer stat-tracking subscription service set to launch with Modern Warfare 3.

Activision’s ‘social media guy’ Dan Amrich reiterated that 2 million people in total applied via email to be part of the Elite beta.

He said that as many people as possible will be crammed into Elite pre-release but beta access will be done in waves, with the first wave being pretty small.

“It’s hard to give specific numbers for these questions, since both of these depend on the system itself,” he said in an Elite FAQ.

“Remember, this is a live beta with an evolving system – it’s like entering the Indy 500 while the car is still being built. As long as the system can remain stable, more people will be invited as frequently as possible – as many and as often as the system can accommodate.”

The beta itself will use Black Ops data with news of its Modern Warfare 3 integration being discussed at the Call of Duty XP convention. Elite will officially launch with Modern Warfare 3 on November 8.

Category: Battlefield 3NightCrawler @ 1:46 PM

Time to get your comparison glasses on

The first Battlefield 3 Battlelog screenshots have hit the net, giving you a glimpse at EA’s stat tracking service and its user interface.

Battlelog was unveiled by EA at E3 last month and was immediately put eye-to-eye with Activision’s own FPS multiplayer stat-tracker Call of Duty Elite.

While the COD service carries a subscription fee, however, Battlefield 3’s Battlelog was announced with a monthly fee of nothing at all.
