Co-op focused title coming in summer 2012.

A new Star Trek game is in development for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC, set for release in summer 2012. Digital Extremes (Dark Sector/The Darkness II) is handling development.

Star Trek continues the story from the recent J.J. Abrams film. Players take control of Kirk and Spock in what is being called an “unprecedented co-op experience.”

“Star Trek challenges the boundaries of co-op gameplay with a galactic adventure that gamers and fans have never experienced,” said Tom Lesinski, President of Paramount Digital Entertainment.

“Working closely with the Star Trek filmmaking team throughout development, the game is sure to deliver AAA production values, a wide variety of gameplay and all the action you would expect from the hit franchise. This will be the definitive Star Trek gaming experience.”

We’ll get our first-look at Star Trek during E3 next week.

Modern Warfare 3 in November?

Category: First-Person Shooters,Modern Warfare 3,PCNightCrawler @ 1:25 PM

The website Kotaku reports they have “learned” that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is in the works and will be released on Nov. 8, 2011, attributing this to “multiple sources,” who reveal details about the story and game modes in the military first-person shooter sequel. They seem pretty convinced this is all bona fide, saying: “we’ve gone to great lengths to nail down as much as possible the veracity of our sources. We believe that the imagery and chief details are accurate. That doesn’t mean things can’t change before release, but this appears to be a full run down of where Infinity Ward, Sledgehammer Games and Raven Software is on Modern Warfare 3 as they add the final polishing touches.” They offer a gallery of art said to be from the game, as well as a separate article that makes no effort to avoid possible spoilers.

The first major details of the as-yet-unannounced Modern Warfare 3 have been outed as part of a major leak.  The single player story will kick off moments after the cliffhanger ending of Modern Warfare 2 with the US attempting to repel a surprise Russian attack.

It is reported that the single-player campaign, which appears to wrap up most of the unanswered questions and character fates of the first two Modern Warfare titles, also introduces new characters who appear to be destined for future Modern Warfare games, especially two Delta Force operatives codenamed “Frost” and “Sandman”.  As well as  The site reports: “The SP campaign will ping-pong players around the world as they take on the multiple throwaway roles as a Russian Federal Protective Services agent, SAS Operative, tank gunner, and AC-130 gunner as well as key characters from previous instalments and new recurring characters.”

Multiplayer in the game returns with a chunky list of playable maps as well as two types of Spec Ops modes: “Survival” and “Mission”.

Kotaku’s sources also suggested that “the game will reshape the landscape of the Call of Duty franchise by introducing a number of eclectic settings, deep multiplayer gaming and a story that ties up nearly all loose ends from previous titles, including the final moments of key figures in the series’ history”.

A slightly spoilerific list of game locations named by Kotaku follows. DO NOT READ IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO KNOW WHERE THE GAME TAKES YOU. NO CHARACTER / PLOT INFORMATION IS INCLUDED:

Dharmasala, India
New York, New York
A plane transporting the president of Russia
A town in Sierra Leone
London, England
Mogadishu, Somalia
Hamburg, Germany
Paris, France
Prague, Czech Republic
A castle in the Czech mountains
Berlin, Germany
The Kremlin in Moscow, Russia
Dubai, United Arab Emirates
Washington. D.C.

So additional information concerning detailed plot and storylines has also leaked and they are as follows:

– The story picks up immeduately after the end of Modern Warfare 2. Price and Soap are making their escape to safety, but the Russian invasion of America continues.

– The story takes in locations all over the planet and sees you playing existing characters and a cast of new Delta Force operatives. The plot revolves around attempts to track down bad honcho Makarov, hold off the Russian forces in occupied America, and bring about a peaceful resolution to the conflict. The Russian President and a peace treaty become major plot points.

– Price and Soap are present throught the story, but it seems that sometimes they’ll be NPCs in the scenes that involve them.

– There are 20 multiplayer levels. It’s not known whether some will be DLC. Brooklyn, Africa and Paris are three locations, and all are also mentioned in the reported storyline.

– Spec Ops returns, and there’s a second mode this time, called Survival. It sounds like CoD’s version of Horde mode, with multiple waves attacking a co-op team until the players are eventually overcome.

Battlefield 3 Preorder DLC Details Revealed

Category: Battlefield 3,First-Person Shooters,PCNightCrawler @ 2:40 PM

The Battlefield 3 Website has new details on the Back to Karkand map pack that DICE announced as a preorder bonus for Battlefield 3 back in February. This includes a bit on what impact the military shooter sequel’s new engine will have on these now-familiar battlegrounds: “From a gameplay perspective, destruction is the biggest addition compared to the original map in Battlefield 2 back in 2005. I remember this particular building by the square in the original where players could defend very effectively. Now, with the destructive power of Frostbite 2, someone can just RPG that building and expose the defenders within. At the same time, we need to be careful not to add destruction that breaks the tried and tested game flow of the map.”

Additionally, today DICE revealed the first bits of info on an expansion pack coming to Battlefield 3 for those who pre-order the limited edition of the game:

Back to Karkand.  This multiplayer pack adds four maps from Battlefield 2 as well as classic “weapons and vehicles, unique rewards, [and] new achievements/trophies” to the new game’s lineup.

The announced maps in this expansion are:

•Strike at Karkand

•Gulf of Oman

•Sharqi Peninsula

The maps have been “re-mastered using Frostbite 2,” Battlefield 3’s new engine. There is no word yet on release or pricing details for anyone who wants the map but does not preorder the game.
