Crysis Patch Delay

Filed Under (Crysis) by NightCrawler on 21-12-2007

crysis.gifThe inCrysis Crysis Forums have word from Crytek on the status of Crysis patches, the SDK, and the Linux dedicated server (thanks McSterls). The update offers patch notes for the first patch and beyond, word on plans for improved mod support, and word that a Linux serer is in the works, but currently has no ETA. The update also confesses to a delay for the first patch, saying “Unfortunately due to heavy technical issues that appeared right before the patch was declared final we could not release it in time.” Word on release plans is: “Based on this feedback we will be able to set a release date for the long awaited Patch #1 for Crysis. If no major problems occur we expect to have it available for public download within January 2008. This is of course related to the reports from the QA departments, but we are confident to match the schedule.”

PC Megahits Crysis and UT3 Flop in Nov. Sales

Filed Under (Crysis) by NightCrawler on 17-12-2007

Despite their high-profile, Crysis and Unreal Tournament 3 sales fizzled in November according to the NPD Group. Are PC gamers flocking to less expensive consoles?

The simExchange reports that neither Crysis or UT3 managed to sell more than 100,000 units in their debut last month.

Crysis, which requires an unprecedented $1500-$2500 in PC upgrades to play, sold 86,633 copies in the U.S., while Unreal Tournament 3 sold just 33,995 copies.

In January 2005, Vivendi said it sold 1.7 million copies of Half-Life 2 in just two months; much more than either Crysis or Unreal 3 for a similar period.

Though both games were released in the middle of the month, their numbers are clearly less than what EA and Midway had hoped for.

Are gamers abandoning the PC? Without jumping the gun, some believe the PC market is shrinking with exception to a few specific genres like the massively popular World of Warcraft MMO.

Indeed, both Xbox 360 and PS3 offer comparable, if not equal, graphics technology in most cases at a fraction of the cost. What was once the platform for hardcore shooters has seemingly been relegated to second place.

Crysis, UT3 Sales Fall Flat

crysislogo.jpgTwo key FPS titles failed to make waves in their opening month of sales in the US..

Research firm NPD Group said that EA and Crytek’s critically lauded FPS Crysis sold just 86,633 units last month, following its release on November 13.

A Metacritic average review score of 91 wasn’t enough to overcome the apparent apprehension regarding the game’s relatively steep hardware requirements. A PC with a dual core processor, 2GB of RAM and a mid-level DX10 card runs the game at around 30 framers per second average at midrange resolution.

Midway and Epic Games’ Unreal Tournament 3 for PC fared even worse, selling just 33,995. However, sales will be supplemented by PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions. The game launched for PC on November 19, also receiving strong reviews.

The FPS market is crowded to say the least. Crysis and Unreal Tournament 3 launched during a time when BioShock, Halo 3, Call of Duty 4 and The Orange Box have been occupying shelf space.

IGN Crysis Review

crysis-20071112063702453-000.jpgCrytek blasts back onto the PC with the most beautiful kind of violence.

Crysis is one of, if not the, most stunningly beautiful games we’ve ever seen. But even beyond that, it’s a pretty fantastic shooter. Solid weapons, intelligent enemies, and fairly open level designs mix with nano-suit powers to make this one of the more entertaining ballistic showdowns in some time. {Thanks! IGN PC!}
