MW3 has COD 4 Mentality, Clamps Down on Campers

Category: Modern Warfare 3NightCrawler @ 2:33 PM

Infinity Ward gives more details on Modern Warfare 3 multiplayer

Infinity Ward has given more details on Modern Warfare 3′s multiplayer, how it’s discouraging campers and creating a more ‘COD 4′ mentality for its latest FPS outing.

The studio is crafting multiplayer maps that have no more than five hotspots where campers are likely to hang out and wait for their prey, the studio says.

“It simplifies it so that the less skilled player has less to think about,” creative strategist at Infinity Ward Robert Bowling, told Kotaku.

“What happens when you have more is that the professional guys are using that spot that is either difficult to get to… There’s fewer places to hide, which discourages the camper mentality that seemed to emerge in the map design of Modern Warfare 2.”

Modern Warfare 3 is also edging closer to the original Modern Warfare than its direct predecessor in terms of general feel and philosophy.

“Modern Warfare style is, for me, all about the high-speed, fast-paced-and I’m talking in terms of smooth controls and 60-frames-per-second framerate-infantry-focused combat,” Bowling continued. “Tt’s all focused on that gun-on-gun gameplay, especially in Modern Warfare 3.

“I feel like it’s something we nailed with Call of Duty 4. We moved away from it a little bit with MW2, relying heavily on air support, killstreaks, perks and stuff like that. Modern Warfare 3, very much [is] building up from that Call of Duty 4 mentality of gun-on-gun, fast-paced infantry gameplay.”

Bowling told CVG about the crack team of QA testers Infinity Ward has flown in specially to put the Modern Warfare 3 multiplayer through its paces. Have a read if you haven’t already.

Call of Duty Elite Beta Invites Released Today

Category: Call of Duty EliteNightCrawler @ 1:49 PM

Have you been selected for the first wave of testers?

The Call of Duty Elite beta begins tomorrow and the first wave of people selected to be testers will be informed today.

Call of Duty: Elite is of course the multiplayer stat-tracking subscription service set to launch with Modern Warfare 3.

Activision’s ‘social media guy’ Dan Amrich reiterated that 2 million people in total applied via email to be part of the Elite beta.

He said that as many people as possible will be crammed into Elite pre-release but beta access will be done in waves, with the first wave being pretty small.

“It’s hard to give specific numbers for these questions, since both of these depend on the system itself,” he said in an Elite FAQ.

“Remember, this is a live beta with an evolving system – it’s like entering the Indy 500 while the car is still being built. As long as the system can remain stable, more people will be invited as frequently as possible – as many and as often as the system can accommodate.”

The beta itself will use Black Ops data with news of its Modern Warfare 3 integration being discussed at the Call of Duty XP convention. Elite will officially launch with Modern Warfare 3 on November 8.

Time to get your comparison glasses on

The first Battlefield 3 Battlelog screenshots have hit the net, giving you a glimpse at EA’s stat tracking service and its user interface.

Battlelog was unveiled by EA at E3 last month and was immediately put eye-to-eye with Activision’s own FPS multiplayer stat-tracker Call of Duty Elite.

While the COD service carries a subscription fee, however, Battlefield 3′s Battlelog was announced with a monthly fee of nothing at all.

Infinity Ward talks up ‘rigorous’ MW3 QA Process

Category: Modern Warfare 3NightCrawler @ 11:23 AM

Studio confirms outside group has been enlisted to help run the game’s multiplayer “through its paces”

Infinity Ward creative strategist Robert Bowling has told CVG the studio’s working hard to identify and address any Modern Warfare 3 multiplayer exploits before the game launches this November.

He also confirmed reports that the studio has flown in an outside group – which describes itself as “a community of gamers who have become infatuated with discovering and sharing glitches, exploits, tricks, and strategies” – to help test the shooter.

“The mapMonkey’s are correct,” he said. “They’re out at the studio to help us run Modern Warfare 3′s multiplayer through its paces.

“While we’ve been hammering away testing on it since it’s been up and running, these guys focus specifically on exploits that can potentially be used to an unfair advantage, such as getting outside a map’s playable area, inside geo, or find weapon / equipment exploits that were not intended by the designer so that we can catch and address these before it gets out to the public.

“They’re a great addition to an already rigorous QA process that the internal team here at Infinity Ward / Sledgehammer and additionally at Activision have been doing since development began,” Bowling added.

Publisher Activision has promised Modern Warfare 3 will deliver “the most advanced multiplayer ever”. Little has been revealed so far, but Infinity Ward has confirmed it’ll feature a heavily revamped killstreak system. Check out a list of rumoured MW3 killstreaks here.

The beta test for new online service Call of Duty Elite, which will launch fully alongside Modern Warfare 3 later this year, is set to kick off tomorrow using CoD: Black Ops.

Yet MORE Battlefield 3 Pre-order Goodies!

Category: Battlefield 3NightCrawler @ 1:01 PM

EA’s set to offer even more pre-order incentives for Battlefield 3, with a FOURTH pack spotted for the DICE first-person shooter.

Amazon’s gone live with a promotion that will see customers receive a code to download the Specact Kit DLC, a collection of “eight unique multiplayer skins”.

The Specact Kit joins Play.com’s bonus dog tags and the Back to Karkand Map Pack, a selection of multiplayer arenas remade from Battlefield 2, available to those who pre-order the Limited Edition version of Battlefield 3.

The fourth pack is GAME’s controversial Physical Warfare Pack, which got the community all aflutter because it offers Battlefield early birds a roster of exclusive guns that won’t be made available to Ordinary Joes at a later date.

Fans complained this would give certain players an unfair advantage, but EA quickly came out to assure the items “were specifically chosen not to be overpowered or imbalance or break the game in any way.”

‘MW3′ URL Points Towards BF3′s Official Site

Category: Battlefield 3NightCrawler @ 12:55 PM

But EA is apparently not to blame.

EA has made it all too clear that it wants to slit the throat of the Call of Duty franchise, as it readies its impressive looking Battlefield 3 to go head to head with Modern Warfare 3 later this year. But today the publisher resorted to some dirty tactics, or so it seemed at first.

Gaming news sites and Twitter feeds lit up over the past 24 hours when it was discovered that the URL www.modernwarfare3.com was automatically redirecting to www.battlefield.com/battlefield3, EA’s official site for its upcoming shooter.

It was assumed by most that the forwarding URL had been set up by EA itself, as part of a cheap campaign to lure away unsuspecting Call of Duty fans, but website Net Media Now did some digging and discovered that the www.modernwarfare3.com site had previously been set up as some kind of “fishy beta sign up scheme” with no apparent ties to EA. Thanks to Google cache, an earlier version of the site was found complete with a video attacking one of the official Modern Warfare 3 trailers, and this caustic fine print:

“Modern Warfare is crap. On November 8, 2011, the most over-hyped first-person action series of all-time returns with the copy and paste sequel to the lackluster Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Check out the E3 2011 gameplay demo featuring the Black Tuesday level for a look at the epic fail of the campaign. Pre-Order Call of Duty MW3 Today for Xbox 360, PS3, and PC to secure exclusive bonuses only available online for Modern Warfare 3 fanboys who don’t know that Battlefield 3 is the better game.”

Hardly the sort of messaging that EA would employ despite the apparent fierceness of the competition between the two publishers, and given the potential legal ramifications at stake it’s likely just the work of a troublemaking fan.

Ultimately the most baffling part of the whole affair is this: games publishers typically register every possible domain name variation for each of their big game releases, so why on earth does Activision not own the www.modernwarfare3.com domain already?

DICE: BF3 uses Frostbite 2.0 on All Platforms

Category: Battlefield 3,First-Person ShootersNightCrawler @ 7:14 PM

Studio dismisses online chatter surrounding engine sharing.

DICE has shot down rumours that the console versions of Battlefield 3 aren’t fully run using the studio’s impressive Frostbite 2.0 engine.

Writing on Twitter, the title’s gameplay designer Alan Kertz said: “Bullshit confirmed. Frostbite 2.0 is the engine running the game on all platforms!!”

So there you have it. There has been a lot made of the differences between Battlefield 3 on console and on PC, with DICE itself admitting that the 360 and PS3 versions will be “scaled down” – but still “amazing”, obviously.

The Future of Battlefield

Category: Battlefield 3,First-Person ShootersNightCrawler @ 1:46 PM

What does DICE have in store for EA’s flagship shooter five years from now? Here are our predictions.

Sure, we’re getting a new Battlefield this year, and it looks phenomenal. DICE is making a concerted effort to take on Modern Warfare 3 while trying to retain its identity to longtime fans with the massive, well, battlefields that they’ve come to expect. But we’re not content to look forward to this October, when Battlefield 3 is set to arrive on PC and consoles. We’re looking to the future – the year of our Lord* 2016, five years from now. So what will Battlefield look like in the middle of what we expect will be a new console cycle and ridiculous new PC hardware? Here are some educated guesses.

*our Lord is inclusive, non-denominational, and is actually just a turn of phrase rather than an expression of support for any particular religion or faith. So take a deep breath. Read about video games.
